Going fishing and being in the water is of huge importance to New Zealand children. While we are out fishing we want to keep safe by being careful and respecting the environment. The fish and birds are also important to us and deserve to be treated with respect and care. Fortunately there are many simple things we can do to make sure we look after ourselves and protect our fisheries at the same time.
LIFE JACKETS
Drowning when out fishing is an all too common occurrence in New Zealand. According to Water Safety New Zealand, 9 children under the age of 15 drowned in 2017. Deaths which could have been prevented by using a life jacket. In his show. Hiwi the Kiwi. Minstrel retells a story of a young child whose father tragically drowned at sea after the boat they were on capsized. Fortunately the child was wearing a life jacket and was able to be rescued. This illustrates how simple safety precautions can literally be Life or Death.

When out fishing we should also be conscious of the safety of our aquatic animals. Fish and Sea birds.

Seabirds
A Lot Of sea birds get caught on the line cause In 2014, just over 5000 seabirds were estimated to have died. The most commonly caught birds include albatrosses and petrels. So if we keep on catching birds especially black petrels they would be extinct.
